Timeline of My Life
Birth
I was born on February 7, 1919, in Lynchburg, Virginia, United States.
Enlistment
I enlisted to serve my country in the military on April 1, 1942.
Marriage
I married my wife, Dorothy Pauline Schutte, on August 17, 1942.
Service
I landed in Guam on July 24, 1944.
My regiment made a surprise landing in the Philippines on
December 7,1944.
Award
I was awarded two Bronze Star Medals with a "V" device in 1944 because of my service in Guam and the Philippines.
Service pt. 2
In April of 1945, I arrived at Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa Japan.
Due to my inflicted wounds from Hacksaw Ridge, I was evacuated on
May 21, 1945.
Award pt. 2
I was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour by Harry S. Truman on October 12, 1945.
Family
In 1946, my wife, Dorothy, gave birth to my only son, Desmond "Tommy" Doss.
Illness
I faced a tough battle with tuberculosis from 1946 through 1951 which cost me a lung as well as five ribs.
Family pt. 2
I went on to raise my family in Rising Fawn, Georgia, until my last days.
Death
I sadly passed away due to difficulty breathing on March 23, 2006.
